Fall 2019
We have had many questions about the CCRI Hospital-based Massage Therapy (HBMT) Training Program over the last several years that are difficult to answer in emails.
So to provide a comprehensive understanding to potential students we plan to hold One Information Sessions to discuss the HBMT Training Program and what to expect. We will also have graduates of the program in attendance to give you their reasons for enrolling in this program and what they took away.
The Information Session will be held on February 19, 2019 between 6-8pm. at the Roger Williams medical Center, RI. Please contact Valeria Serpa for more detailed information.

More importantly these informational sessions are open to any health care provider interested in learning more about working with individuals who have medical conditions.
The following provides a thorough explanation of the program and the many benefits you will realize by participating in this "life changing" course.
What additional personal enhancement does this educational opportunity offer you as a licensed Massage Therapist that you will not get from any other continuing education course you have taken?
This course is conducted, on site, in one of two major medical facilities in Southeastern New England: Saint Anne's Hospital in Fall River, MA and Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, RI.
The Hands-On Segment of this session is like no other continuing education you have ever experienced. It provides a you an opportunity to be part of a medical support infrastructure for a brief period of time and realize what a difference you can make in the day of someone who is experiencing major medical challenges.
The course is held over a ten week period for one four hour class per week. It is specifically scheduled this way to accommodate your professional obligations as a licensed Massage Therapist and to provide you the unique opportunity to utilize and practice the clinical skills and knowledge you will be learning.
Your increasing clinical skills and knowledge of Oncology Massage Therapy will be positively reinforced and expanded by extensive, real-time, Hands-On practice of these specialized modality techniques because you will be working continuously with the Patients of both these medical facilities during class sessions.
Lectures and reading materials have been carefully selected to assure that this curriculum meet the objectives defined for this course as described on the CCRI/CWCE Website: https://www.ccri.edu/workforce/workforce/healthcare/MassageTherapy1.html
But the classroom involvement is only a small part of the learning experience.
As an Oncology Massage Therapy Student you will develop your own personal insight and awareness of the many journeys of Oncology Patients as they travel through the medical pathways designed for the treatment of their individual battle with Cancer and its Residual Side Effects.
You will be given the rare gift of sharing a brief moment with another human being who is at the most vulnerable time of their lives.
You will sit next to Patients in their recliners as they receive lifesaving transfusions in the Outpatient Infusion Clinics.
You will stand by their hospital beds or sit next to Patients in their hospital room recliners as they endure the medical treatments prescribed for their individual diagnosis in the Inpatient Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and Acute Care Units.
You will greet Patients in the Waiting Rooms of the Doctor’s Offices and Radiation Area and offer to provide relaxation and anxiety release from the anticipation of the next appointment.
You will learn to provide these men and women with a momentary respite from the reality of why they are there by gently massaging their hands, feet, or necks or by having a quiet conversation about life’s mutual experiences.
In return you will be changed forever by the resiliency and spirit of these incredible human beings.
You will return to your practices with the knowledge that you will never be the same and your existing client community will benefit from your experience as an active participant in this program in ways you cannot imagine. Our students reaffirm this at the end of each session!
You will establish collegial relationships with Medical Professionals at both hospitals. The medical staffs are extremely supportive of the Oncology Massage Program and appreciative of the degree of care and focus the Oncology Massage Therapy Students provide to their patients.
As an Oncology Massage Therapy Student, for the 10 Week Class Period, you become an Official Intern at either Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, Mass or the Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence, RI. In this capacity you will be able to interface with the medical staff and the patients under the supervision of your respective instructor.
CCRI/CWCE HBMT Program Director, Regina Cobb MSW, LMT, CMLD has built an Instructor Staff who not only have extensive experience in the Massage Therapy Profession but also other fields that enhance the training experience for all students. Additionally the schedule has been created to take into consideration the professional commitments of the student attendees. The class is held for 4 hours one day a week for 10 weeks. At Saint Anne’s Hospital it is 8am to 12pm; at Roger Williams Medical Center it is 10am-2pm. This flexible scheduling arrangement allows the Massage Therapists students the opportunity to arrange their schedules accordingly with their own clients.
Each hospital mandates that the Oncology Massage Therapy Student must meet all the Health Regulations and Credential Requirements of their respective medical facility. This is for the protection of the Patient Population, Medical Staff as well as the Oncology Massage Therapist.
After completing the Level I Curriculum many Oncology Massage Therapists are anxious to return for Level II Curriculum, which is more intensive.
Our ACOM Website lists out the Oncology Massage Therapists who have completed the Hospital Based Massage Therapy Program to date. Upon completion of the HBMT course each student is listed as a Certified Oncology Massage Therapist for the states they are licensed in. Please check out the pages on the left hand side and find your colleagues who have enhanced their skills and techniques by expanding their Massage Therapy knowledge.
