THE HBMT VISION
HISTORY of the CCRI Hospital based Massage Therapy Program
The Hospital based Massage Therapy Program (HBMT) is the vision of Regina Cobb, MSW, LCMT, CMLD - Program Director of the Therapeutic Massage Program at the Community College of Rhode Island (CCRI) and Program Director of the HBMT Program at CCRI's Community for Workforce and Continuing Education (CWCE).
Selected in 2011 to attend the Oncology Massage Curriculum at Boston Medical Center, which was based on Tracy Walton’s pathology textbook, Medical Conditions and Massage Therapy: A Decision Tree Approach, (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2011), Ms. Cobb immersed herself into the curriculum in Boston, MA. while also handling her challenging educational responsibilities in Newport, RI.
Energized by the experience, and with Tracy Walton’s blessing, Regina Cobb returned to Rhode Island with the goal of creating a Hospital based Oncology Massage program. A great deal of planning and effort with a core group of colleagues that had extensive backgrounds in various disciplines which included Massage Therapy, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Shiatsu and Education, evolved into the CCRI/CWCE Hospital based Massage Therapy Program:
The 40 hour certificate program, approved by NCBTMB, provider #450515-07, is a ten week hands-on course that offers the unique experience of working in one of two major medical facilities IN New England…..
Regina Cobb was tireless in contacting medical institutions in Rhode Island to offer them participation in the HBMT program. Never one to be deferred from her goal, Ms. Cobb recognized the need to expand the search outside of Rhode Island. Ms. Cobb presented the program to the Medical Staff and Healthcare Professionals at Saint Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, MA. Carol A. Billington – VP and Chief Nursing Officer willingly became the Champion needed to support the program. With the support of the CCRI Center for workforce and Community Education (CWCE) a contract was finalized and the first Hospital based Massage Therapy Program was held at St. Anne’s Hospital, Hudner Oncology Center, and Fall River, MA in September, 2012.
In every endeavor it is critical to keep momentum and visibility heightened in order to ensure that the professionals who would benefit are made aware of a program’s existence. In the traditional marketing avenues of CWCE the program was advertised in the CCRI/CWCE Newsletters and flyers were created for distribution at school locations.
Ms. Cobb, being very cognizant of the need to keep awareness of the program viable did not rely solely on the traditional marketing avenues of CWCE. She placed advertisements in the RI AMTA Newsletters and flyers were placed at other locations in Rhode Island and SE Massachusetts.
In June 2013, Ms. Cobb presented the HBMT program at the Department of Health RI Partnership to Reduce Cancer Summit. This conference is attended by healthcare professionals throughout the area. This participation resulted in a pivotal meeting with the Roger Williams Medical Center, Providence. RI.
In the fall of 2013 Ms. Cobb made a presentation to the Medical Staff at Roger Williams Medical Center (RWMC). The doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals embraced the program totally, recognizing the benefits to their patients and staff. Impressed by the program structure and research information provided at the meeting the Medical Staff ordered 11 copies of Tracy Walton’s pathology textbook, Medical Conditions and Massage Therapy: A Decision Tree Approach, (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2011) which is the primary textbook used by the HBMT program.
The first HBMT Program was held at Roger Williams Medical Center in March 2014.
